Doing business in Austria

Austrians are known for liking to shop with their German neighbor. A full 40 percent of Austrian online spending is done abroad and three-quarters of that are in Germany alone. One example of successful online expansion here is the Berlin-based fashion retailer Zalando, which is now the second-largest retailer in the country and generates over 170 million euros in sales.

When shopping online, Austrians like to pay by card. Over 93 percent of online stores, therefore, offer card-based payment methods such as credit card, Visa, and MasterCard. This is immediately followed by PayPal, which is offered by 79 percent of stores.As in many other European countries, Amazon has a strong market position and is the largest provider of online retail.
